This Day, Actual and Given

The psalmist does not say the Lord will do something tomorrow, or has done something in the past worth remembering. The Lord has done it this very day. Not metaphorically. Not eventually. Now. The tense matters because gratitude without a specific object is just sentimentality. You cannot thank the air. You thank for the particular meal, the particular person who stayed, the particular breath that came when you weren't sure it would.

This is why Paul tells the Thessalonians to give thanks in all circumstances, not for all circumstances. There is a difference. You are not asked to be grateful that hard things exist. You are asked to notice, inside the hard thing, what the Lord has actually done: the friend who called, the strength that showed up, the next hour that came. The specific mercy, not the general category of suffering.

Every gift comes from above, and gifts are concrete. They have weight and shape. A cup of water. A moment of clarity. A person who understands. The ability to try again. These are not abstractions. They are what the Lord has done this very day, and they are real enough to hold in your hands, real enough to say thank you for out loud.

Rejoicing is not a feeling you manufacture. It is what happens when you stop looking away from what is actually in front of you and name it: this was given to me. This arrived. This did not have to, but it did. The gratitude follows the noticing, not the other way around.
