The Lord Notices Broken Things

Grief does not announce itself politely. It arrives in the middle of an ordinary task, in the space between waking and sleep, in a song on the radio that you thought you'd forgotten. The person who is grieving often cannot explain why today is harder than yesterday, only that the weight has shifted and settled somewhere new.

The Psalmist knew this. He did not write that God is close to those who pray well or believe correctly or manage their pain with composure. He wrote that the Lord is close to the brokenhearted. Not eventually. Not after you've processed enough or found the right words. Close. Present. The original word for 'crushed in spirit' carries the sense of being pressed down, squeezed, diminished. God is not distant from that condition. He draws near to it.

This is not the same as removing the grief. The text does not promise that sorrow will leave quickly or that loss will suddenly make sense. But it says something harder and truer: you are not alone in this. The God who heals broken hearts and binds their wounds notices when you are crushed. He does not require you to be stronger first, to grieve more quietly, to move on faster. He is already close.

Those who mourn are called blessed not because mourning is good, but because in that place of deepest breaking, comfort becomes real. It is not abstract. It arrives as a hand, a presence, a refusal to leave you there alone.
