Courage is often pictured as the absence of fear, but the verse for today suggests something different. The Spirit given to us does not produce timidity. That's not the same as producing fearlessness. Timidity is the choice to shrink, to apologize for taking up space, to swallow words that need saying. Fear might still be present. But timidity is what happens when fear gets to decide who you are.
The power the Spirit gives is not borrowed from confidence or circumstance. It comes paired with love and self-discipline, which means it is not reckless. You can act with conviction and still act with restraint. You can move forward and still move carefully. The Spirit's gift is not a surge of adrenaline that makes you feel invincible. It is steadiness. It is the capacity to do what matters even when your hands are shaking.
Self-discipline is the overlooked part of this verse. It means you get to choose how your courage shows up. Not everyone needs to see it. Not every moment calls for it to be loud. But somewhere inside, the timidity that says 'I should not' gets replaced by the quiet conviction that says 'I can, and I will.' That replacement happens in the Spirit, not in your circumstances changing first.
The world will not suddenly become safer or easier. But you are not being asked to be brave in the absence of God. You are being asked to notice that the Spirit is already here, already working, already making room for you to move.
