Wings

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

Isaiah 40:31

Isaiah spoke these words to exiles who had been displaced for decades, people who had watched their city burn and their temple collapse, who now lived under foreign rule in a land that did not want them. The promise was not that their circumstances would immediately reverse. It was that their strength would be renewed in the middle of exile, not after it ended.

The image is specific: wings like eagles. An eagle does not flap constantly to stay aloft. It finds a thermal, a column of rising air, and rides it upward without effort. The strength comes from knowing where to position yourself, not from how hard you work. Hope in the Lord is that positioning. It is the choice to stop generating your own lift and to let yourself be carried by what is already rising.

The verse moves through three stages: soaring, running, walking. Each requires less visible motion than the one before. Soaring looks effortless. Running is hard but still forward. Walking is just putting one foot in front of the other. The promise covers all three. When you cannot soar, you will run. When you cannot run, you will walk. And none of it will empty you, because the strength is being renewed as you move, not stored up beforehand. You do not have to wait until you feel strong to take the next step. The step itself is where the strength meets you.
