The God Who Is Not Far

“God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. For in him we live and move and have our being.”

Acts 17:27-28

Paul stood in Athens surrounded by marble altars to gods who required pilgrimages, rituals, sacrifices brought to specific temples on specific days. The Athenians had even built an altar to an unknown god, just in case they had missed one. They understood deity as distant, transactional, requiring the right formula to summon attention. Paul looked at the altar and said: the God you worship without knowing is the one in whom you already live and move and exist.

The verse does not say God will be near if you seek him correctly. It says he is not far from any one of us, right now, before the seeking begins. The seeking itself happens inside a presence already here. You live in him. You move in him. Your being unfolds in him. The search for God is not a journey toward a distant location but a waking up to what is already holding you in place. This changes what it means to reach out. You are not crossing a gap. You are noticing who has been here all along.

The Athenians built altars to manage uncertainty. You build plans, backup plans, contingencies for the contingencies. You search for purpose by scanning the horizon for signs, waiting for the moment when the fog clears and the path becomes obvious. But purpose is not a destination you arrive at after the right amount of seeking. It is the discovery that you are already held, already seen, already moving inside a presence that does not require you to find it first. The God who made you is not waiting at the end of your search. He is the one sustaining the breath you are using to look for him.

Heart Takeaway

Stop treating God's presence like a reward for correct seeking. The next time you feel lost, place your hand over your heart and feel it beating without your instruction, held by the one who is not far.
