The Wounds He Binds

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

Psalm 46:1

Psalm 147:3 says God heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. The image is medical, not metaphorical. The Hebrew word for 'binds up' is the same one used for wrapping a physical injury, the kind of careful work a physician does with torn flesh. The psalmist is not talking about feelings that fade with time. He is talking about damage that requires intervention, the kind that leaves you unable to move forward on your own.

Grief opens wounds that do not close by themselves. You can distract from them, numb them, pretend they are smaller than they are, but they remain until something outside you addresses them directly. The verse does not say God observes your brokenness from a distance or offers comfort as a concept. It says he heals and he binds. Active verbs. Present tense. The kind of help that requires proximity, that gets close enough to touch what hurts.

Psalm 46:1 calls God a refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. The word 'refuge' in Hebrew means a shelter you run to when something is chasing you, a place that holds you when you cannot hold yourself. It is not an idea you consider when life calms down. It is the structure that keeps you from collapsing while the storm is still overhead. The promise is not that trouble will pass quickly or that mourning will feel lighter tomorrow. The promise is that you will be held while it lasts, that the God who binds wounds is already present in the place where yours are open.

Heart Takeaway

Where is the wound today that you have been trying to close on your own, and what would it look like to let God's hands be the ones that bind it?
