What Carrying Does to You

“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.”

Psalm 55:22

You are holding something right now that was never meant to stay in your hands this long. A worry about money. A relationship that will not resolve. A decision that keeps circling back. The weight of it has become so familiar you have stopped noticing it is there, but your body knows. Your shoulders know. The tightness in your chest when you wake up at 3 a.m. knows.

David wrote Psalm 55 from the middle of betrayal and danger, surrounded by people he could not trust, carrying fears he could not solve. He did not write it after the crisis passed. He wrote it while the threat was still real, while the weight was still pressing. And in that moment, he named the one action that changes what carrying does to you: he cast his cares on the Lord. Not dismissed them. Not pretended they were smaller than they were. He lifted them off his own capacity and placed them where they could actually be held. The peace that follows is not the absence of the problem. It is the presence of someone strong enough to sustain what you cannot.

This is not about feeling better before you hand it over. It is about the handing over itself. Philippians says to present your requests with thanksgiving, not because you have already received the answer, but because you are no longer the one responsible for carrying the question. John records Jesus promising a peace the world cannot give because it does not depend on circumstances lining up. Isaiah says the mind kept on God is kept in perfect peace, not because it stops thinking, but because it stops trying to hold everything alone. The righteous are not shaken, the psalm says, not because nothing shakes them, but because they have been held steady by someone who does not let go.

Heart Takeaway

Write down one thing you have been carrying alone, fold the paper, and leave it somewhere you will see it tomorrow. Let that act remind you that you named it, you handed it over, and it is no longer only yours to solve.
