The Arithmetic of Courage

“What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”

Romans 8:31

Opposition has a way of making itself feel like the final word. A closed door. A failed attempt. A voice that says no when you need to hear yes. The weight of it can flatten you into stillness, into the belief that resistance is simply how things are meant to end.

Paul asks a question that rewires this arithmetic entirely: If God is for us, who can be against us? Not whether opposition exists. Not whether obstacles are real. The question assumes both are true and asks something sharper: what does opposition actually weigh when placed on a scale with God?

This is not optimism. It is not pretending difficulty away. It is the kind of courage that does not require the removal of fear first. Joshua was told to be strong and courageous not because danger had disappeared, but because the Lord would be present in it. Isaiah's words about not being dismayed do not promise a life without trouble; they promise a hand that will uphold you through it.

Courage is not the absence of opposition. It is the recalculation of what opposition means when you are not facing it alone. When you know you are not facing it alone. The person standing against you is not the final authority over what happens next. The closed door is not the last door. The no is not the only answer available.

This changes how you move through a day. Not recklessly. Not without wisdom. But with the quiet weight of someone who has done the math differently and found it true.

Heart Takeaway

Name one specific opposition or obstacle you are carrying right now. Then ask yourself honestly: am I treating this as though God is absent from it, or present in it? Let that answer shift how you approach it today.
