The Disciples Forgot to Eat

“Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, 'Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.'”

Mark 6:31

Jesus watched the crowd pressing in, watched his disciples moving from one person to the next, watched the hours slip away unnoticed. No one had stopped. No one had thought to. The need in front of them was too immediate, too real, too visible to pause for something as ordinary as food. So Jesus interrupted. Not with a rebuke, but with an invitation: come away. Get some rest.

Rest is not what happens when you finally run out of steam. Rest is what you choose before the breaking point arrives. It is not the reward for finishing everything; it is the thing that makes finishing anything possible at all. The disciples were not lazy. They were not avoiding work. They were drowning in work, and they could not see it themselves. Someone had to name it. Someone had to say: this matters more than the next thing on your list.

The quiet place Jesus offered was not an escape from responsibility. It was a return to sanity. In that rest, the disciples would remember who they were serving and why. They would remember that they were not the source of healing, only the vessels for it. They would remember that their own depletion serves no one. Rest restores what constant giving depletes: the knowledge that you are not the one holding everything together.

What you are carrying right now - the work, the worry, the weight of being needed - it will still be there tomorrow. But you will meet it differently if you have stopped. Not because the burden will have changed, but because you will have.

Heart Takeaway

Identify one thing you have not paused for because something else felt more urgent. Choose to step away from it today, even briefly, and notice what returns to you in the stopping.
