An anchor does nothing visible. It sits below the surface, in the dark, while the boat rocks above. You cannot see it working. You only know it works when the storm comes and the boat does not drift.
Hope functions the same way. It is not the feeling that everything will turn out fine. It is not optimism or positive thinking. Hope is the conviction, placed deep and deliberately, that God's character does not change when circumstances do. That conviction holds when circumstances are exactly what you feared they would be.
The verses alongside today's passage speak to this: God's plans are real, not wishful. His love has already been poured out, not promised for later. And the God of hope does not merely offer hope; he fills you with it, through his Spirit, so that it becomes part of how you function. Not a feeling you chase. A foundation you stand on.
When the boat rocks, the anchor does not prevent the rocking. It prevents the drifting. And that is enough. That is everything.
