The Arithmetic of Stillness

You are supposed to be resting, and instead you are calculating. How much more needs to happen before you can stop. How many tasks remain in the queue. Whether the pause will cost you something. The mind does this automatically, converting rest into a problem that requires solving.

Psalm 46:10 cuts through this arithmetic with a single command: Be still. Not be productive in a restful way. Not optimize your downtime. Not use the pause strategically. Simply stop the motion and the measuring. The verse that follows reveals why this matters: 'know that I am God.' The knowing cannot happen while you are still calculating. It requires the cessation of your own effort, your own accounting. God is exalted not by your busyness but by your surrender of it.

This is not laziness dressed up as spirituality. It is the opposite. When you stop defending your worth through what you accomplish, when you release the ledger you keep, something shifts. The burden you have been carrying - the sense that you must earn your place, prove your value, keep everything from falling apart - that burden was never yours to carry. Jesus offers this explicitly: the yoke he gives is easy, the load is light. The exhaustion comes not from the work itself but from the lie that the work is yours alone to manage.

The green pastures in Psalm 23 are not a reward for productivity. They are where the shepherd leads you when you stop running. Stillness is not the absence of care. It is the presence of trust. And trust cannot be faked or hurried. It can only be practiced, moment by moment, each time you notice yourself calculating again and choose instead to be still.
