When God Draws Near

Crushed in spirit is not a metaphor. It is the weight that makes breathing deliberate, the kind of pain that arrives without warning and settles in the chest like a stone. The psalmist knew this weight. He named it plainly, which means he also knew something else: that God does not wait for grief to become manageable before he shows up.

The promise is not that the Lord will fix what is broken on your timeline, or that closeness will feel like comfort right away. It is simpler and stranger than that. He is close. Not distant. Not disappointed by the shape your grief has taken. Close to the brokenhearted specifically, the way a parent sits beside a child who cannot stop crying, not to make it stop, but to make sure they are not alone in it. This proximity is itself a kind of salvation, though it may take time to recognize it as such.

What makes this true is not sentiment but presence. The Lord does not heal by explaining why the hurt was necessary. He binds up wounds. He will one day wipe away every tear. But today, in this moment, he is close to you where you are. Not where you think you should be. Not where you fear you will remain. Here. Now. In the crushing itself.

This does not mean pain disappears. It means you do not carry it in isolation. That distinction matters more than it sounds.
