The Hand That Holds

Courage is not the absence of fear. It is the decision to move forward while fear is still speaking. Isaiah 41:10 does not promise that the dismay will leave or that the trembling will stop. It promises something more useful: God will strengthen you and help you. God will uphold you with his righteous right hand. The hand is already there, already extended, already at work. You do not have to feel brave to be held.

Notice what the verse does not say. It does not say fear is weakness, or that you should have conquered it by now, or that real faith means feeling nothing. It says: do not fear. Not because fear is impossible, but because the one who made you is present. The same God who spoke light into darkness, who called Abraham forward into the unknown, who walked with Daniel into the lion's den - this God says to you: I am with you. The promise is not the removal of the circumstance. The promise is the presence within it.

The righteous right hand is a specific image. In scripture, the right hand is where power lives, where authority rests. It is the hand that acts, that steadies, that catches. You are not being asked to manufacture confidence you do not feel. You are being held by a power that does not depend on your steadiness. What you are asked to do is notice the hand. Acknowledge it. Stop pulling away. Let yourself be upheld.
