The Arithmetic of Thanksgiving

Gratitude is not something that comes naturally when life is fractured. It requires a deliberate turn of the mind, a choice to look at what remains rather than what is missing. Paul writes to the Thessalonians to rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances, then adds a clarification: this is God's will for you. Not a suggestion. Not a nice sentiment. A will. An actual direction for how to live.

The instruction sounds impossible until you notice what it is not asking. It does not say to give thanks for all circumstances. There is a difference. Gratitude for difficulty is not the same as gratitude in difficulty. One requires you to pretend poison is medicine. The other asks you to notice that even in the presence of poison, there is still bread, still breath, still the particular person sitting across from you. Every good and perfect gift comes from above. Some gifts arrive wrapped in ordinary paper. Some arrive despite the wreckage around them.

This is why the practice of giving thanks is a discipline and not a feeling. You don't wait until gratitude arrives like an emotion. You begin by naming one true thing: the cup of coffee, the friend who called, the way your body still moves. You taste and see that the Lord is good, which means you have to actually taste something. Not imagine it. Not wish for it. Taste it. The practice rewires what your attention settles on, and attention is where all of life actually happens.

God's will for you is not your happiness. It is your freedom. Thanksgiving is the practice that frees you from the tyranny of what you lack, because it trains your eye to see what is already in your hands.
