The Name Changes Everything

You wash the dishes. You answer the email. You show up to work. You listen to someone's worry. These are ordinary acts, the kind no one photographs or celebrates. They happen in kitchens and cubicles and hallways where nobody is watching. The temptation is to treat them as separate from faith, as the stuff you do between the moments that actually matter. But Colossians 3:17 cuts through that split: whatever you do, in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.

In the name of Jesus changes the weight of a thing. It means the small act is not small. It means the invisible work is not invisible to the one who matters. When you do something in someone's name, you are doing it as their representative, carrying their character into the world. A dish washed in the name of Jesus is not just a dish washed; it is an offering. A word spoken in his name carries his intention. A deed done in his name reflects his love, not your mood or your obligation.

This is where gratitude enters. The verse does not stop at naming Jesus; it adds: giving thanks to God the Father through him. Gratitude is not a separate spiritual practice bolted onto your day. It is the natural response when you realize that every action, no matter how routine, can be an act of worship. When you see your work that way, you begin to notice what you might have missed: that you had the strength to do it, that someone benefited, that you were present for it at all. Thanksgiving becomes the lens through which ordinary life reveals itself as grace.

The Father sees what the world does not. He sees the integrity in small choices, the love in unwitnessed acts, the worship in work done with his name attached to it. When you give thanks through Christ, you are acknowledging that even your capacity to do these things comes from him. Nothing originates with you; everything flows through him.
