The Umpire in Your Chest

Peace is not the absence of conflict. It's a referee. Colossians 3:15 speaks of letting the peace of Christ 'rule' in your hearts, and that word 'rule' carries the weight of an umpire making the call when everything is contested. When competing desires clash, when you're pulled in opposite directions by fear and hope, by obligation and rest, by what you want and what you think you should want, peace is the internal arbiter that settles the matter. It doesn't eliminate the tension. It decides which voice gets to lead.

This is why the instruction includes gratitude. Thankfulness isn't a mood booster tagged onto the end; it's the fuel that lets peace actually function as a ruler. When you notice what is already held, what is already given, what is already secure in Christ, the noise of competing demands loses its grip. The anxiety doesn't vanish, but it stops being the loudest thing in the room. Gratitude gives peace the authority to speak.

The peace of Christ works differently than the world's peace. The world's peace is the silence after the storm passes, the relief when the problem is solved. Christ's peace is available now, in the middle of the storm, while the problem remains. It doesn't require your circumstances to cooperate. It requires your attention to shift: toward what was promised, toward the body you belong to, toward the One who said peace was being left behind as a gift. That shift is not automatic. It's a choice made again and again, each time you let the umpire call the next play.
